For the last 22 years I have been at the helm of my business CRAIG CHAPMAN HAIR DESIGN in Launceston, Cornwall. Being a salon owner and passionate about developing young talent, education and creative work, I have had the pleasure of teaching many students over the years, growing my small town salon into a UK recognised brand and directing many projects, industry, commercial and charity that all inspire me and drive me forward at a great speed!
I LOVE working on Afro hair! Not the obvious for a West Country stylist but when I started my training 30 years ago i worked as personal assistant to an ethic hair specialist and my initial train consisted of working on all hair types. This led on to me working in Banjul City, The Gambia and Dakar for a year where i strengthened the skill to a level I’m not sure I would have achieved in the U.K… My love of this has led on to winning three awards in the later years, Mizani Afro Catwalk (first ever winner!) Your Hair Afro Stylist of the year and British Hairdressing Awards Afro Stylist both in 2012. A great shock for my home town, boundary breaking in the industry!
Competitions are like fuel to me and I regularly work on the industries finest, having been nominated for Most Wanted Website, Twelve nominations at the British Hairdressing Awards for Afro (with that win!) Regional and Avant Garde, a dozen finalist positions at L’Oreal colour trophy (with a win 2007) and Bridal Salon of the Year at the West Country Wedding Awards to name a few… God I’m knackered! It’s a driving force for the whole salon, team and clientele alike. Stopping anytime soon….. I don’t think so!
Training is also a massive passion of mine, starting as an Advocate for Sebastian International back in the 90’s and winning two scholarships to L.A, the basis to my future training had started. In the salon or out, I can’t get enough of helping talent grow and develop, so projects like THE CULT TEAM to enhance young stylists opportunities, presenting at the local colleges and national training for the likes of Matrix, Hair by Sleek and Orofluido, of which I have been/am UK ambassadors for, are key to my survival! There is nothing like the buzz of teaching somebody something new, or gaining new knowledge to pass on…. IM A JUNKIE!
With a rising Session Career that spans back to a meek attempt fifteen years ago to a weekly work schedule these days, editorial, fashion week, international campaigns, Canne Film Festival, TV shows, and Celebrity clientele, are the creative outlets that makes me strive forward! Opportunity comes from a tonne load of hard work with a splash of fate and luck, all which comprise of commitment and this is something I try and install in my twenty strong team, friends and piers alike.
Charity is also of huge importance to me… As any one will know having a life threating illness in your family propels you to help.. As a salon we are very proud to be Ambassadors for Bosom Buddies. An amazing charity based on educating young women at school to be aware of Breast Cancer in a positive way. We also work alongside Bowel Cancer West which is a research charity developing new treatments.. Over the last 10 years with the team, family, friends and clientele we have raised over £50,000 for which we were recognised last year with a Cooperate Heart Award at the Passionate Pink Heart Awards at Blenheim Palace. One very proud group of people let me tell you.
Without my position as Director of Craig chapman Hair Design, my strong team of 20 hardworking, talented people and an exhilarating industry to work and teach in, what would I do! Probably be Louis Spence’s side kick!
I’m not a creative genius, but I am passionately creative…..
